Iowa Supreme Court to Hear Oral Arguments in Toledo Nov. 10
On Tuesday, Nov. 10, the Iowa Supreme Court will hear oral arguments at the Wieting Theatre in Toledo, Iowa. The oral arguments are open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m.
The court will hear attorneys argue in the following case:
State of Iowa v. Duval Tremont Walker, Jr., case number 24-1108 from Linn County District Court.
Case summary: Defendant appealed his convictions for first-degree murder and going armed with intent, arguing that the district court improperly denied his challenges for cause to two prospective jurors exposed to news coverage and erred in refusing an imperfect-self-defense instruction. The Iowa Court of Appeals ordered a new trial based on the district court’s refusal to strike a juror who knew of Defendant’s prior guilty plea to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The Iowa Supreme Court granted the State’s application for further review.
Attorney briefs for the case are posted on the Iowa Judicial Branch website.
A public reception with the supreme court justices – sponsored by the Tama County Bar Association and the Wieting Theatre Guild – will follow the oral arguments.
