Testing at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant 29-30 Sept.

Middletown, Iowa – Iowa Army Ammunition Plant will be testing 40-pound cratering charges on 29-30 Sept. This includes 10 cratering charges being detonated per day on both 29 and 30 Sept. Live-fire testing is a routine activity that occurs at IAAAP. Although the testing may be audible in areas outside of the facility, the noise is not expected to reach levels that would concern the public. During these detonations, the community may hear a loud boom. Testing will occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting. The operation may be delayed by rain or high winds. These tests are part of routine munition processing and have nothing to do with lead azide. Currently, IAAAP is storing unused production supplies of lead azide that were reclassified as hazardous waste requiring safe disposal. The operation for lead azide destruction will be later this year, and the plan will be communicated to the public separately. As always, safety is the most important consideration at IAAAP. Strict observance of proven procedures has resulted in an excellent safety record maintained by the personnel at IAAAP.
